The Greenhouse Project

The Grant Information
Middle Earth Healing and Learning Center in Citronelle, Alabama has been awarded a grant from the Gulf Coast Resource Conservation and Development Council to implement an educational project entitled Solar Greenhouses/Water Conservation Demonstration Project. The project consists of two side-by-side greenhouses powered by a photovoltaic solar system and 2 cisterns for rain water collection, which will provide water for irrigation within the greenhouses using solar powered pumps.

The educational objectives of the solar greenhouse project include: (1) a demonstration of solar technology as a viable source of energy production in small scale sustainable agriculture within a local community; (2) a demonstration of water conservation and irrigation strategies through rain water collection; (3) to become an educational resource regarding conservation technologies within the region with particular emphasis on outreach to youth.

In conjunction with this project, Middle Earth is offering volunteer opportunities for interested individuals and/or groups. The phases of development are as follow: (1) construction of a retaining wall incorporating used tires which will be planted when completed; (2) construction of the greenhouses and installation of ventilation system; (3) installation of the off grid photovoltaic solar system; (4) installation of a rainwater catchment system., and drip irrigation. Volunteers will have an opportunity for a hands-on, in-depth learning experience with sustainable renewable energy technologies.

Middle Earth is an evolving education center modeling permaculture, sustainable living, and the interconnection of the health of the planet and the health of her inhabitants. Renewable energy technologies currently in use at Middle Earth include an off grid photovoltaic system for intern housing, a grid tied photovoltaic system demonstrating both roof mount and pole mount, a rainwater collection system for the house, and a ZAP totally electric truck.
